History
It is considered as the world’s first motorway which was built in Berlin in between 1913 and 1921. In southwestern Berlin, a 19 km long AVUS also known as “Automobil-Verkehrs- und Übungsstraße” were built as an experimental highway which was also sometimes used for racing cars. The Autobahn was originated in this way. There were 2 eight meter lanes which were separated by a 9 meter wide median. After the World War II, the Autobahn network was expanding to 2,128 km. There were many construction projects that were added until recent years. In 2007, this network was expanded to 12,531 kms. And the Autobahn becomes the 3rd largest super highway system after USA and China.

There are emergency telephones at every 2 km intervals.
Above all there are pre-signed detour routes if there is any emergency closure.
There are wildlife protection fencing, everywhere, and the crossover tunnels and the “green bridges” for wild animals.
